We stayed at another KOA after leaving Oliver Lee … to get good Internet and upload a whole bunch of stuff…then we found a fabulous park called Chiricahua National Monument.

Filled with hoodoos and interesting trails; it was quite a way out of the way or so we thought. We didn’t pass any other vehicles for a long time so I started to wonder, then I saw the sign. When we arrived, we found the park was full! We knew there was dispersed camping around, but we’d have to drive on a lot of washboard roads to get there. At the visitor’s centre we found out there was a cancellation and space for a 20 foot trailer, we took it. The campground map showed the maximum length of RV that the site could accommodate – our lovely trailer is 19.5 feet tip to tip – ok the messed up bicycle rack extended past that size but it had a high overhang.

It was a very tight fit in all directions but backing in slowly worked and I was able to position the trailer the first time in.

Fortunately we were there early enough to unhook the trailer and drive out for some hiking. We asked the camp host about staying another night – no luck – but he did point out some of the places that we could stay outside the park that were free as there would be some sites opening up after this night. We went hiking through the hoodoos…thus lots of photos.

This guy just posed for the photo, then he begged for food…unbelievable.

We stayed at the top for sunset – we are seeing some beautiful sunsets out here.

The next day we checked again with the camp host for cancellations, but no luck…we were still unhitched and thought it smart to drive out to check on getting to the dispersed camping area just in case we found one reasonably close to the park…it was a good thing the trailer was not attached and that we had a 4 wheel drive truck…Staying here this time around is not to be. We are not done with this park. So we hitched up and headed to a place called Gila Box Canyon…that too had adventurous roads…
